Mystifyingly straight-to-video here, this brutish tale of “boys from the O'Hood” is a cracking tale of bullets and blarney, carried along by a good cast. Set in Boston, it stars Denis Leary as the small-time car thief who is forced to examine his loyalty to local crime boss Colm Meaney when one of his relatives (Billy Crudup) falls foul of the gangster. With the supporting players including Famke Janssen, Ian Hart, Martin Sheen and Jeanne Tripplehorn, this is a classy affair directed with some sympathy by Ted Demme. Grunge fans should look out for a cameo from Greg Dulli, lead singer of the Afghan Whigs.

    Just enough rope...

Bleak, gritty drama about Irish ex-pat families in America. Good performances by Dennis Leary and Famke Jannsen (one of the few actresses to reap real success after being a Bond woman) but ultimately it's difficult to get on side with such unsympathetic characters. Still, a good film all the same. Worth renting if you want something a bit on the bleak side...

    Ted demme should be savoured

This wasn't quite his last film but for a man who died of a heart attack at 39 the copious quantities of cocaine abuse throughout this film becomes quite pontiant.

The direction is certainly one of the highlights of this seamy look at boston's irish gangsters but the quality casting seems to reunite most of the cast of Demme's minor classic Beautiful girls to great effect and the inclusion of Denis Leary in dramatic role is a little bit of inspiration.

On the negative side there is a lack of tension and Leary's sideburns prove very distracting.
