This is Pride and Prejudice with a social conscience, a collision between Northern no-nonsense and delicate Southern sensibilities.
An intelligent, moving, thought-provoking and visually striking adaptation
After seeing the first episode on TV i was instantly hooked. The weeks could not go by fast enough, and even after seeing the final episode i just had to read the book, by Mrs Gaskell. She is a truly inspriational writer, and this tv adaption covers beautifully the essence of the characters and the turmoils they go through. It is about Margeret Hale, who is uprooted from her idyllic country village in the south and taken to a pulluted and noisy industrial town in the mill. There she meets a vast array of people, from the ich mill owners who she immediately takes a dislike to, and the workers who she befriends. It is one of the greatest love stories ever told and there is so much else happening at the same time that you really are on the edge of your seat. The only warning i give you is to have enough time to let it take it over your life, as i'm sure it will. TV has never been so good!
Elizabeth Gaskell's novel is deliberately Northern in its character. Tmes are hard. The landscape is spare and unfriendly. Men have to graft for a living, and there is little time for niceties. All this is the substance of the film, so don't expect another Pride and Predjudice. However, in my view the two (BBC) films are certainly comparable. They are both great love stories, in which things do not always go smoothly. They are both beautifully produced, and strongly acted. It is difficult for me to choose between them. I like P&P for its total romantic escapism, even if the characters never do a day's work in their lives. I like N&S for its touch of serious reality, with a great love story bound in.
Give this a go. I am sure you could learn to love it, provided you give it the time.
