  • Truly Wonderful

    [Highly rated reviewer]

After seeing the first episode on TV i was instantly hooked. The weeks could not go by fast enough, and even after seeing the final episode i just had to read the book, by Mrs Gaskell. She is a truly inspriational writer, and this tv adaption covers beautifully the essence of the characters and the turmoils they go through. It is about Margeret Hale, who is uprooted from her idyllic country village in the south and taken to a pulluted and noisy industrial town in the mill. There she meets a vast array of people, from the ich mill owners who she immediately takes a dislike to, and the workers who she befriends. It is one of the greatest love stories ever told and there is so much else happening at the same time that you really are on the edge of your seat. The only warning i give you is to have enough time to let it take it over your life, as i'm sure it will. TV has never been so good!

  • SO MUCH HISTORICAL VALUE!!! :)

A great series with also lots of historical value. It is not a normal boring love story. Miss Hale has such a hard life, as you will find out later on in the series. AMAZING!

  • Brilliant Period Drama!!

Brilliant...I love period drama's, this being no exception. I think Daniela Denby-Ashe and Richard Armitage were very much the right cast for this. Also, oh my word...I was pleasently surprised to see Jo Joyner (aka, Tanya) from Eastenders. Thoroughly enjoyed this.

  • North & South

Initially recommended by my sister - therefore assumed I would hate it as we never like the same films. I also thought she meant the American North & South series based on the civil war but realised that she meant the english BBC version.

I'm so glad I watched this - infact, once I started I had to watch both discs. It was as gripping as Pride & Prejudice (Colin Firth version). The two leads are fantasic - nothing like an old fashioned romance. I loved it so much, I have decided to buy the series. I am now looking at other Elizabeth Gaswell material to see if it is as good.

  • Smouldering Winner!

    Rated - 4.5 stars

This period drama is a winner! It does the traditional woman hates man but comes to see his true virtues as the series progresses...as do the viewers. And many virtues he has, ladies! Mr Thornton does a mean line in smouldering looks - just get watching and you'll know what I mean! It would have had 5 stars from me but I wasn't amazingly keen on the casting of Daniella Denby-Ashe as Miss Hale - just a tad lacklustre.
