    Truly Wonderful

After seeing the first episode on TV i was instantly hooked. The weeks could not go by fast enough, and even after seeing the final episode i just had to read the book, by Mrs Gaskell. She is a truly inspriational writer, and this tv adaption covers beautifully the essence of the characters and the turmoils they go through. It is about Margeret Hale, who is uprooted from her idyllic country village in the south and taken to a pulluted and noisy industrial town in the mill. There she meets a vast array of people, from the ich mill owners who she immediately takes a dislike to, and the workers who she befriends. It is one of the greatest love stories ever told and there is so much else happening at the same time that you really are on the edge of your seat. The only warning i give you is to have enough time to let it take it over your life, as i'm sure it will. TV has never been so good!

    Brilliant

What a great actor Richard Armitage is, he gave great credince to his role as John Thornton. Hope to see him in more roles in the future.

The passion is there in every scene between Margaret and John it makes for riveting viewing, if you've not seen this yet add it to your list now.

    Enjoyable and slightly unusual adaption

This costume drama is a little more unusual than most, as it doesn't deal with the rich nobility. It deals with the burgoning love affair between a soft Vicar's daughter from the South of England and a tough Northern factory owner. Excellent detail and lovely camera work, particularly considering its television. I felt Denby-Ash was poor casting and lacked spirit in her role so it looses a star. However, Richard Armitage as Mr. Thornton was perfect, combining toughness with vulnerability. Far more to my taste than Colin Firth. Worth a watch if, like me, you love a rugged man in period costume.

Like Pride and Prejudice? You'll love this!!

The BBC have done it again with another sumptuous adaption of a famous 19th century novel.

Gaskell's North and South has been described as 'Pride and Prejudice with a social conscience' and that's pretty much true.

The basic plot is of a southern family move to a northern mill town, overcoming difficulties, clashing with the locals and trying to adapt.

Daniela Denby Ashe's Margaret Hale is a passionate and graceful heroine who is slowly dazzled by the smouldering, proud, misunderstood John Thornton. (Anyone see a pattern emerging here?)

Sinead Cusack's Mrs Thornton is a tough yet tender matriarch, and other great supporting performances from Tim Pigott Smith and Brendan Coyle deserve a mention. I shouldn't forget to mention the perfect score and evocative photography.

Although not 100% sticking to the novel, this great adaptation captures the essence of this wonderful novel and will leave you wanting more.

Couldn't recommend more if I tried really.

LOVE PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, YOU'LL LOVE THIS!

A mesmiring, tender love story between two opposites. This is as beautiful as the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, if not better! But beware, you will not be able to stop yourself watching it all at once!

    Loved it! Absolutely wonderful!

I thought Pride and Prejudice was the best but 'North and south' makes Pride and Prejudice appear trivial in comparison. It is a beautiful story built within reality, life and true love. Having seen many period dramas, I can say this is by far the best of all and absoultely amazing. And yes, Thornton is better than Darcy any day.

(i'd never have said that before )

    Better than Pride and Prejudice

and I never thought I would say that.

Truly one of the best adaptations I have ever seen and the only one that I have just watched twice over.

It is so well written and acted, with more realism, depth and characterisation than anything I have seen in ages.

The leads are exceptional and its lovely to see maxwell-martin again.

Cusack is fantastic as a old witch you either want to hate or feel sorry for.

    Cannot reccommend it enough.

It is on a par with bbc's persuasion as my favorite period peice.

    Passion/Tension

I loved this film, it draws out the story so slowly and superbly, just like a manicured lawn, every detail taken care off. You realise the attraction from part 1 when she first walks into the cotton factory and you truly feel as if you are there with her and all the cotton flying around. A superb period romance film excellently played by both parties, but Thornton is just exquisite, sometimes reading the wrong signals and misunderstanding what she is saying and she so blunt in the wrong places and and not forward enough in others. The tension at times is just too much and when they finally get together at the station it is just such a sigh off release you feel you are almost kissing Thornton yourself. A wonderful film, I could watch it again and again. Also very educational about the period in time and the cotton industry.

Many women will love this film as I think it would be enjoyable to watch anytime of day or night.

    Excellent period drama!

This series really brings to life the differences in social status of that time and its consequences. The acting was very good by all. We loved this adaptation and couldn't wait for the next disc to be sent!
