This film looks fantastic, and I mean really, just great. Imagine two hours of these gorgeously framed, beautifully shot tableaus of bleak Montana landscape. Glorious. Then the Polish Brothers went and populated this wintry landscape with wonderful, weathered, character filled faces such as Woods, Coyote and Nolte. Genius. Unfortunately, clearly the last thing they filled in was the plot. The basic plot of an evacuation with a bit of metaphor would have been fine by itself, but all the stuff about angels is just an exercise in pretension. I like a film that makes you think, but where this film should give you the opportunity to make up your own mind, it denies you the chance. For example, the dying child thinks he is an angel, and is being judged by other (extremely strange!) angels. Is he an angel meeting other angels, or are these his last fevered imaginings inspired by the objects on his bedside table? These are the kind of things that it should be left to the viewer to interpret, but instead we've got poor James Woods pratting about with a pair of genuine angel wings in a suitcase. We are left with no option but to believe angels 'exist' in this universe. I find that annoying. Film highlights are the ark in the middle of a great plain, and James Woods' breakdown in a roadside toilet/makeshift confessional - pure poetry. Ultimately whether you enjoy this film will entirely depend on whether you can accept a film that delivers beauty without meaning, and story without resolution.

This is one flood movie that would've been better off being drowned at birth.

If you have 90 minutes or so to spare, I would suggest a better time could be had by laying butt-naked on a bed of nails while scraping a stainless steel comb across one's fillings, rather than sitting through this pretentious damp puddle of piffle!

  • Didn't watch all of this

Saw the beginning of tis but there were several reasons we didn't continue. It was very slow, dark and we couldn't make out the dialogue. We were in a fog as to what was happening and who was who. Decided it wasn't worth the bother of wasting the time.

I would also like to warn people who may have migraine or a similar illness that it begins with a series of flashes from one scene to another.

  • Beautiful but bland

I was expecting much from this movie having read several articles and reviews and in some ways it did deliver. Beautifully photographed, well cast and a nicely surreal atmosphere. But something was lacking and I think it was the omission of emotional highs or moments of excitement. The whole film 'plays' at the same level throughout and because of this you lose the initial sense of intrigue gained in the first twenty minutes. There are no surprises. No insights. It feels bland. Beautiful but bland.

Being a fairly 'normal' kind of person, whatever that means, I found this film just too weird for words. Some of those words might include surreal, hypnotic, obscure and abstract. Compared to this film, David Lynch is a song and dance routine. However, the cinematography is quite superb and the fine array of famous name actors live up to their reputations. If you're into the metaphysical, then you may love it. Otherwise, I suggest you give it a miss.

  • Pretentious

I hardly ever turn off a film before the end, but I made an exception in this case. I had been expecting an intelligent art film when in fact, although the landscapes and shot composition are striking, the screenplay is pretentious and assinine - with unwise attempts to be 'funny' which fall completely flat.

    Avoid.
