This is a very moving and interesting meditation on the various ways we investigate our past. It is inspired by the massive state of the art observatories that have been set up by international teams in the middle of the Chilean desert.

A juxtaposition is made between the study of past light from other worlds/solar systems/galaxies which receives massive international support and the hidden history of Chile's recent past which is still concealed under a veil of silence.

While I had a rough idea who Pinochet was the story told in this film was shocking enough that cheap shock tactics weren't required.

The only criticism really was that the montages of footage of the universe were mainly based on widely available NASA images so instead of being wow'd by the wonder of it all I was thinking I could be sat at home watching my laptop screensaver - this did lessen the awe a tad.

  • Amazing meditative film

Absolutely amazing meditation through human life and existence. Politically interesting - extremely moving, and beautiful to watch. I think the people who didn't rate it highly perhaps weren't engaged in the way that this film requires. You really need to engage with it, it's not a fall asleep on the couch kind of film!

  • Had me wondering

I was wondering if I was going to enjoy this for about 10 minutes and then I got into it and the narrative and images had me entranced so much that I could not believe the end came so quickly. It's not fast moving so be warned if you are after something with a bit more action. But we'll worth watching.

  • A few too many photos of space and not enought analysis

The concept of comparing the Atacama desert events of the Pinochet era with the peaceful exploration of space through the large telescopes there was a good one. In practice it didn't really work out and instead we got a lot of pretentious photos of the universe for long periods of time. The attempt to make it 'arty' meant it lost the power

  • Astronomy and history meet: Dead stars and murdered leftists in Chile

This is as much a political film as it is phliosophical. If you want something easy to watch rent something else. If you want a film that deals with the role of time and history in our lives and the tenacity of fuman spirit then you will appreciate this film. The scenes where relatives of lef-wing young activists (who were murdered by Thacher's firend, Pinochet, in Chile) search the desert for their remains, deliberately scattered there by their murderers to hide their crimes, coincide with scenes of incredible beauty where, in the same desert, astronomers search for the light from stars long gone. Astronomy, history, memory, time and humanity in one filmic narrative. A very moving and clever film that manages to avoid being pretentious. Highly recommended.

  • Very slow documentary

The quality of the image is quite bad (I had the BluRay) which is a shame as there are many beautiful shots. The pace of this documentary is painfully slow, if you are learning spanish then this is great because even the narrator speaks very slowly. The interviews are very interesting though.
