This is classic!!! I was a kid when this was first aired and I remember a lot of the sketches from those times when the whole family would watch. I have seen some reviews that claim the DVD is too 'topical'. 80% of the sketches are just pure British comic genius and require no particular era, but then there are a few jokes and references that refer to politicians and celebrities that aren't around anymore. For those that find this 'topical', I suggest you use your imagination... this stuff is hilarious! If you were born before 1973, I don't think you'll be too confused. You'll love Gerald the talking Gorilla as well as the stereo salesmen. If you like fast-wit-Brit-com (gulp), then place this DVD on your list. You won't be disappointed. It's 400% better than any 'new' comedy that's been on the TV here in the UK in the past 5 years. At least, you will learn what makes the SCOTLAND YARD sign turn around and also what goes on during the night shift at BBC Television Centre.... 5 STAR!
I was looking forward to a bit of nostalgia when I added this item to my rental queue. Fond memories of the show from my youth just served to up my anticipation. Well it arrived and I was disappointed.
Like those first loves we lost back then, this had also lost it's shine and sophistication. The actual footage had aged badly, and was very patchy in quality terms. The content, well those familiar faces did make be chuckle a couple of times, but that wasn't much reward for the 2 hour sitting. This show just doesnt have that timeless quality that later went into "Black Adder" and the like.
The topical nature of the series meant the news and personalities of the day featured heavily. Sadly lots of them are no longer with us or have faded into the "D list" celebrity graveyard.
Not recommended except for die hard fans.
