An unconvincing melodrama made tolerable only by Judi Dench's performance.

Despite the fine acting I just couldn't get into this movie. Perhaps the subject matter or story failed to engage as the acting performances were really good and not the problem here. Not the worst movie I have seen but I was expecting more from such a fine cast. All in all, good but not great.

Ok so I have decided in my infinite wisdom to review every single film I have ever seen on love film... Currently still on the letter 'A' Once again I am a bit flummoxed as to why this movie comes up under the letter 'A', but hey ho... i don;t think Cate Blanchete was the perfect choice for this role... She's just a bit too femme fatale and despite a convincing performance I just don't believe she would need to be drawn into the dodgy affair... I'm also not convinced by Dench's character.. it just all seemed a bit made for TV...

Good srory with an exceptional cast. Wasn't sure at first but the acting brings the film to another level. The DVD extra's are worth viewing.

Hmmmmm, what is it with film makers that they feel they have to change what happens in a book when they make a film of it? I understand that this is a film, not the book, and as always, these films tell us at the start that it is 'Based on the book.....' etc, so I don't expect a chapter and verse retelling. What I don't understand is why they feel the need to (as far as I was concerned) change the dynamic of the book by messing about with the relationship between Cate Blanchette and Dame Judi's characters. Oh well, you can't win em all.
