Historically important drama from director Michael Roemer that was the first film with a mainly black cast aimed at a mixed-race audience. Reflecting the era of the civil rights movement during the early 1960s, the story, set in Alabama, follows the trials of railroad worker Duff (Ivan Dixon) who falls in love with, and marries, preacher's daughter Josie (Abbey Lincoln). Trying to settle down to life in the town, Duff soon comes face-to-face with the ingrained racial hostility of his bosses, and is forced to come to terms with the lack of respect and dignity afforded him by the town's population. As the couple attempt to surmount their problems and live their lives, they realise that their love for each other can overcome even the sturdiest of barriers.

Rather amazing to watch this film in the week that a Black man has been elected President of the United States.

A timely reminder of how society has progressed and will hopefully carry on progressing. Definitely an incredibly watchable film that has an important place in the history of cinema, it shows the grim reality of a man fighting against the odds, and regularly stumbling, but managing to pick himself up and carry on fighting.
