A very good gem that gets us away from New York and brings zest to the romantic comedy genre
By roncoach (365 reviews) from suffolk , 27 Oct 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
Where is Cary Grant and Doris Day ? Not needed. Hugh Grant and the wonderful Julia Roberts do it better.
This is a little gem of a film which this genre keeps coming up with , whether in the 1930s or in the 21st century.
It's delightful, touching, funny, amusing.....and plain enjoyable.
Hugh Grant can make some hopeless films ( unlike Julia !) but he shows here what he can do when he is a bit more discerning about the roles he chooses.
This is a delightful film, which brings London into our homes--------the 'feel' of the place permeates the film; and it shows how good it is compared to New York ( the normal setting for most films ??). No wonder so many Americans decide to settle in Britain once they have visited.
Go on, take a chance and watch it if you haven't already done so-------just when you think every bit of good cinema has been squeezed out of the romantic comedy genre......along comes a 'Notting Hill'. Recommended.- Was this review helpful to you?

By a customer , 25 May 2012I watched this film because everyone talks about it so much. I have to admit i did enjoy it and there were some funny parts, but its nothing special. A typical romantic com but definately worth a watch.- Was this review helpful to you?

Hugh plays HIMSELF in every bloody film he's in!
By vanilla_quiff (284 reviews) from Gatwick, England , 31 May 2011Fantastic.
A nice Sunday-afternoon style film. Very fluid & easy to watch.
Although Julia looks like she has a DOUBLE top-lip when she smiles, and Hugh doesn't actually ACT, but plays himself in EVERY single sodding film, the overall story is brilliant.
Rent this, get the tea & biscuits out and chill.
It's worth every second.- Was this review helpful to you?

England for Americans
By BeccyMalloi (124 reviews) from Kersey, Suffolk , 16 Oct 2009The thing that gets me the most about Richard Curtis films is his portrayal of England. Everyone lives in beautiful georgian-terraced streets in lovely parts of London. They are positively well off and awfully well spoken.
This is obviously catering for the US box office and how they imagine England to be. Its such a cop-out!
Maybe I could live with this if the plots weren't so lame. You know exactly what you're going to get with EVERY film.
For me, Notting Hill is literally the worst of the bunch. I wasn't actually able to sit through all of it for fear of vomiting violently..
...and another thing- why is everyone (minus the odd exception) white?- Was this review helpful to you?
