The Four Weddings team produced another smash with this charming tale about a bumbling bookshop owner (Hugh Grant) who falls for the “most famous actress in the world” (Julia Roberts). Inevitably, the course of true love is a bumpy road, with friends, family and flatmates getting in the way, but that's the cue for a series of screamingly funny scenarios. Saturated with wit and well directed by Roger Michell, the film was bashed by sceptics for its fluffiness and lack of realism (for a racially mixed area of London, there's not a black face to be seen). But, if you can accept the context as 100 per cent white middle class, with a light-hearted commentary on the nature of celebrity, it's an intensely enjoyable experience.

Slight but clever and often funny romantic comedy, making witty use of national stereotypes.

    I love it

Ok, so I live there, and it's fabulously embarrassing to like this film. And the film itself has a totally unbelievable plot about an average guy meeting a Hollywood movie star.

But it's great fun and really well done and London looks great. I think I'll go and lie down now.

    Very pleasantly suprised!

I've avoided this film since its release as generally films with as much hype as this one received normally turn out to be damp squibs.

I really really enjoyed this though and am so glad I gave it a go.

The husband was off to go play on the PS2 rather than sit through a chick flick but caught the first 10 hilarious minutes and was hooked and sat through it right to the end and thoroughly enjoyed it!

True, there are no real plot suprises, but this film is funny and sweet, and so well executed and acted - it really doesnt matter - give it a go, you wont be dissapointed!

British Romantic Comedy that can't fail

What if you (mere mortal you) bumped into a major celebrity and they fell in love with you. This thought has gone through 90% of the population's minds. Here it's Hugh Grant who clumsily bumps into Julia Roberts. Will they won't they, can they can't they follows! It's a sweet film with some great comedic moments: particularly the birthday party in the middle!

One for your cosy winter nights in.

A rather appealing love story about the lowly owner (Hugh Grant) of a London-based travel book store whose happiness has slowly withered away until a well-known movie star (Julia Roberts) comes in one day. The pair are drawn to each other and that leads to a roller-coaster relationship. Roberts and Grant are both great to watch and so is Rhys Ifans, who colorfully portrays Grant's awkward roommate. All round good entertainment.

I love this film, seen it loads but just had to rent it and watch again

This film is great and if you haven't seen it before, OMG!! With Julia Roberts taking the part of a famous acress who falls in love with a regular man Hugh Grant an owner of a book shop. And how they struggle though trying to be together etc what with the media etc. It's funny, romantic and probably based on a little truth that makes you realise how hard things must be for celebs sometimes.

Not only have i seen this loads, rented it on here, i've just gone and brought it too.

    Definately worth watching

4 Weddings and a Funeral meets Bridget Jones

    Funny AND romantic.

Okay, so you sit through the film wanting to reach in and shake Hugh Grant sometimes. The trouble is that most of us can relate to the scenario. How many of us have let the partner of our dreams slip through our fingers because we haven't had the nerve to do what we really want to? When we look back over the past we think we could have done things differently, but in reality we wouldn't. This isn't reality either. It's a feel-good movie. It makes me feel good and it makes everyone else I know feel good. Don't try and dig too deep; just enjoy and feel good.

    Romantic Drizzle

I'm afraid I wasnt too impressed by this one, disappointly. I thought with Hugh and Julia, they couldnt really go too far wrong, but that was not the case. Ok if you want a movie which you really dont want to think about the plot, coz there isnt really one!

    Sappy, but well done

OK, it's a chick-flick. But if I have to watch one with the wife, might as well be a good one. This one was pretty decent and I enjoyed it. But jeez... the shmaltz!

Difficult not to love this film!

Mostly 'stock' characters for this very 'London' movie - but such a lot is recognisable in our urban 21st-century society.

BUT: ... the irresistible combination of 'contemporary London', recognisable urban landscapes, our eaves-droppings on 'typical' London evenings ... All seems SO natural!

And those Notting Hill dinner parties: SO close to the truth but, finally, an unashamed piss-take ...

Such a lot to enjoy in this film. If you've not yet seen it, go for it and have fun!

    Fun but no classic

Well crafted, with slick dialogue and presentation, a pleasant and entertaining movie. Ultimately, though, the predictable plot, and minimal development of the supporting characters prevents it from being truly memorable.
