Ca - Ca - Cairo!

So what's new about a 007 spoof, you might ask? After all, we've had Austin Powers, Get Smart among others. However, OSS-117 doesn't target the usual areas of cat stroking villains, silly gadgets and sci-fi missile bases. Rather, it sends up the sheer chauvinism of those early movies, as well as the cinematography and style, by viewing the early films through today's PC mentality.
Watch Jean Dujardin as he enters a casino with Sean Connery's mannerism down pat: the adjusting of the cuff links, the nonchalant straightening and smoothing down of the tie, the swaggering, steely gait as women turn to admire him. It's uncanny, and you come to realise just how much of Bond in the Sixties was Connery's creation and not really Ian Fleming's character.
The cinematography is a nod to those early adventures, and the movie mainly spoofs From Russia With Love and Thunderball. The main joke is how chauvinistic the hero is, not just in terms of sexism but nationalism and colonialism, and how he puts noses out of joint when he is sent to Egypt.
It's not perfect - about 20 mins in it seems a one-joke movie and bits of it remind one of spoofs of the day, of which there were plenty. Morcecambe and Wise's The Intelligence Men had suspect-looking men in fez's tailing the leads, and that's going back a bit. There's no funny or serious villain, like Mike Myers' Dr Evil or Ricardo Montalban's Naked Gun nemesis, for the hero to go up against.
But the scene where OSS117 wakes up in Cairo one morning had me laughing out loud and the whole thing looks wonderful. It's a Bond spoof without falling into the mad scientist/Ken Adam sets or funny gadgets routine. Throughly recommended.- Was this review helpful to you?

A spy who is easy on the eye..
By a customer , 10 Jun 2012Having fallen in love with the divinely handsome Jean Dujardin after watching ‘The Artist’ I thought I would see some of his other films. OSS 117: Cairo Nest of Spies was a curious mix – part ‘Get Smart’ (a Classic TV series of the 1960s starring Don Adams. This gives my age away!), part Inspector Clouseau. Somehow it didn’t quite work for me. Perhaps French humour is different from British or something, as they say, was lost in translation. Never mind Jean Dujardin is easy on the eye so it was worth it anyway.- Was this review helpful to you?

More Inspector Clouseau than James Bond!
