George Clooney and his A-list pals have fun in the Las Vegas sun in this thoroughly enjoyable caper from director Steven Soderbergh. In a loose remake of the 1960 Rat Pack venture of the same name, Clooney comfortably steps into Frank Sinatra's shoes as Danny Ocean, who is fresh out of jail but still sets about putting together an audacious heist with the help of a ten-man crew. His star cronies include Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Carl Reiner and Don Cheadle, who affects the worst cockney accent you've ever heard. The plan is to hit the vault containing the take from three of the biggest casinos in Vegas, all of which belong to Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia), the guy who just happens to be dating Ocean's ex-wife Tess (Julia Roberts). This is one of those films that's a joy from start to finish, but doesn't strain the brain for a second. Thankfully, the mechanics of the heist take second place to the glorious interplay of a stellar cast that is clearly having a ball revelling in the sharp, quick-fire dialogue.
A remake as self-indulgent as the original, though slightly more fun; a little more wit, and less striving to seem cool, would have been welcome.

Probably not a lot of point in criticising this one, but I found it a lukewarm version of "Mission Impossible", with some very annoying macho characters.
Maybe Sinatra and his boozy, misogynistic rat pack companions were the height of cool when the original was made over 50 years ago, but times have (thankfully) changed.
Julia Roberts - referred to at one point as another character's "worldly goods" or some such - cannot alone compensate for the bloke-ish posturing of the over-rated Brad Pitt.
And what's more, it's really boring.
Think I'll give Ocean's 12 a miss.
this film is superb... George Clooney is Danny Ocean, an ex -convict who was jailed on fraud charges.
He is now released from Prison, and decides to rob three of Las Vegas's largest and wealthiest casinos, the Bellagio, the Mirage and the MGM Grand, owned by Terry Benedict played by Andy Garcia, who now has a relationship with Ocean's ex-wife Tess, played by Julia Roberts.
With the help of his old friend Rusty Ryan, played by Brad Pitt, Danny gathers together a crew of 11 people, to help him rob in one night all three casinos, a plan never accomplished by any man.
the crew are:
1) Frank Catton (Bernie Mac),
2) Rusty Ryan (Brad Pitt),
3) Reuben Tishkoff (Elliott Gould), inventor of the casino security systems and huge enemy of Terry Benedict,
4) Virgil Malloy (Casey Affleck)
5) Turk Malloy (Scott Caan), twin brothers,
6) Livingston Dell (Eddie Jemison), electronics expert and currently working for the FBI,
7) Basher Tarr (Don Cheadle), explotions - munitions expert,
8) Yen (Shaobo Qin), 'the grease man',
9) Saul Bloom (Carl Reiner),
10) Linus Caldwell (Matt Damon), who is the son of one of Ocean's best friends,
plus 11) Danny Ocean (George Clooney), who is the 11th member and the leader of the crew.
Danny explains his plan to the crew, but although the plan is very clever, it is going to be virtually impossible to break the security system.
So, they decide that the big robbery night will be the night, where a very important boxing game will be taking place, when the vault will be containing over $163 million dollars.

This is simply a good old fashioned heist movie with something you just don't in this era of inflated pay cheques and that's an all-star cast. Everyone looks great and looks like they are having a great time. This film isn't going to win any awards for doing anything deep and meaningful but it is a complex and exciting robbery and it does manage to give all the actors a chance even though screen time is at a premium. I'm not sure what the Rat-pack would have thought of this film but they probably would have given everyone a pat on the back for the effort.
i like it when you can outsmart and outmanoevre someone who thinks they are smarter than you are. i well and truly enjoyed it even if i had watched ocean thirteen before i watched it.
Let's be honest. The original Ocean's Eleven wasn't a great movie. But it was certainly a memorable one. Vegas and the entire Rat Pack on screen for the first time made it an event picture. Soderbergh's film is just as much of an event and, more importantly, it has taken the essence of what was good about the first film and given it a new millennium polish, with a cast who don't buckle under the weight of expectation.
Bar a few in-jokes for the old school fans, no prior knowledge is necessary. This is entertainment of the effortless order. Soderbergh's pacing leaves scant room for fidgeting, and the story spills out frame by frame so that plots can twist just seconds faster than you can cotton on.
Clooney's generous headlining performance gives plenty of scope to showcase the rest of the talent, and no-one here is lacking. Few directors have made their stars look as high-wattage. Garcia is just bad enough to want to destroy, and Roberts elusive enough to be the natural object of affection. Watch for the scene where she crosses the casino floor switching her allegiance from one man to another - that's a definite movie star scene. Damon relishes his role out of the limelight as the new kid on the block, while his same-age team-mates, Casey Affleck and Scott Caan, go for laughs.
Don Cheadle does a cockney accent to rival Dick Van Dyke, but somehow gets away with it, and Elliott Gould and Carl Reiner do some grade A scene-stealing without unbalancing the movie. Yet, special mention has to go to Brad Pitt. Loitering in the background, generally snacking, he delivers a quiet performance that suggests the hidden strengths beyond his pretty boy looks. This is one movie where wearing a suit well does him no harm at all.
But if your tastes are of a less superficial nature, there's Soderbergh's trademark cutting technique to hitch the movie up a notch, stunt work (particularly courtesy of grease-man Shaobo Qin) that can't be faked, and a heist that deserves the build-up.
This is a movie that plays to all demographics without feeling like a by-numbers production. To berate it for being shallow is to miss the point. This isn't the seamy Las Vegas, where the house always wins. It's a film that's as well-constructed and glamorously shiny as the monoliths that now dominate The Strip. The good guys are crooks? So what! If only all crooks were this nice. No guns, no gangster cliche swear-a-thon. This is a movie that plays to fantasies, and few do it with such relish.
With neither a badly-pressed suit nor a redundant scene in sight, Ocean's Eleven is as slick as they come - and that's a compliment rather than a criticism. Joyfully entertaining and effortlessly re-watchable.

This is a great re-make of an old classic. It is packed full of big names, with big talent. With so many brilliant actors in one film it is hard to say who was best, as they all played there parts admirably. Although saying that, Clooney and Pitt together were dynamite.
There are lots of little twists and turns that keep you guessing about what is going on. A very strong story and cast make this film a must-see, whatever type of film you like.
reviews do help sometimes.
since most of the reviews in this site heaped praises on this film, i rented it and found it to be true.
it makes one enjoy as if we were a part of the oceans eleven.
the twist in the tale is excellent and unexpected.
watch out for this one.
u cant afford to pause or stop it.
Wow...I had put off renting this for a while as I could not be bothered to watch the older day 'Brat pack' in action.
I was suprised excellent storyline and brilliant acting and the Bellagio well I was there on the opening night and it is 'ALL THAT!'
Brilliant Loved the film and looking forward to Ocean's Twelve.
I really didn't enjoy this film that much. The plot is predictable, the twists obvious and it's all been done before. The acting performance is average - no stunning performances, and it feels like they're just going through the motions. The DVD extras are the trailers and a 'behind the scenes' - which is just all the press interviews.
In summary, I wouldn't bother.
An excellent film, George Clooney and an all star cast at their best. With an excellent story that will keep you guessing until the end, this movie never fails to keep you glued to the screen.
I got the original by mistake a couple of months ago and I have to say I enjoyed it just as much, dated as it was.
Not that this is a bad film, just that there was nothing really original. It is slick but slightly empty. And I just hated the Julia Roberts role. She didn't bring anything to the film whatsoever. She was just a sub plot that the film would have been better off without. And Don Cheadle's mockney character was also pointless. It was amusing in a way but if they wrote an English role, why not give it to an English actor?
It is worth watching but you won't see anything that you haven't seen before.
Call me old and grouchy, but while this is an good, slick, modern caper, it just didn't hang together for me.
The film spends a lot of its time just giving the huge cast equal airtime, time which would be better spent developing the plot or characters: as it is, people often do things for no apparent reason and the plot holes are simply enormous by the end of the film - which, incidentally, is a standard issue 'Hollywood-sudden-happy-ending' grafted on for the romantics amongst us.
Don't get me wrong, this is an enjoyable romp but it has nothing to make it stand out from the crowd; a film for a rainy afternoon or to watch with the kids. Turn off your critical faculties, let yourself get swept along and you'll enjoy it, especially if hi-tech hi-jinks are your thing.
