If Mike Leigh?s dramas are considered gritty ?kitchen-sink? material, then I?m afraid this Danish effort is of the stainless steel variety. Light in tone and lacking any real raw emotional energy, Okay at times carries the air of TV drama rather than a feature length film. Whilst Steen provides a wonderful performance as the desperate mother valiantly struggling to maintain the family unit, the bland supporting characters, tame script and rather pointless gay family sub-plot, effectively dilutes any potential for a real hard-hitting drama. Of course this is just a personal opinion and others will no doubt enjoy it but if you are looking for something a little more ?stronger? then there are better dramas out there (any of Lukas Moodysson?s films for example). 2.5/5.
