Blew me away
By Rob Pickles from Manchester , 22 Jan 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
I heard about this film out of the blue by listening to Mark Kermode talk about it. After that a few other people talked about it and one of the main praises for the film was the fight scenes. They were great but not realistic. Having said that the way it was shot was brillaint and i think the corridor fight scene was done all in one shot, i don't remember their being an edit. But it's the bizarre story that is best of all. The ending was obvious 3/4 of the way through so seemed dragged out when the guy finaly gives his reason for it all. But over all it was great and haven't seen anything like it before. Definatly in the top 3 films of 2004 of what i've seen.
If South Korea has anymore films like that, then i've been missing out and especialy you Tarintino fans. So i suggest you Tarintino lovers watch this film if you want to see gruesome torture. And if you want to know what i'm getting at, a guy having his ear cut off in Reservoir Dogs is soft compared to what happens in the OldBoy. This film is not for everyone. But if you seek originality and like being suprised by how far violence can go then you'll love this film. Not forgetting though that the best part of this film is how it gets the viewer to question if revenge is worth seeking.- Was this review helpful to you?

(815)Hammer Time
By Jonnyfuzz (3 reviews) , 25 Apr 2013I was a bit bored one night so thought I'd try something different. I was totally blown away by the film. What a great story. Incredibly violent, but if you can get past that (or hide your eyes behind you hands if you must), you're in for a treat. The only thing that lets it down is the big secret involving two main characters I thought was quite obvious- Was this review helpful to you?

Switched it off
By jshfleet (6 reviews) , 17 Mar 2013This was too weird but not in a good way. Having figured out how to turn on the dubbed english we gave it about 20 minutes and then stopped watching the film.- Was this review helpful to you?

Persecuted Crazyboy
By wrightman (93 reviews) from Maidstone , 13 Mar 2013This film is not an easy watch. The first section is very confusing. It then becomes very violent and sadistic. The final revelation is horrific. It is not for the faint of heart. It makes one wonder how someone can come up with such a cruel and horrifying tale.- Was this review helpful to you?

Very good movie
By Akybra (1 review) , 09 Mar 2013Excellent movie. Korean movies are quite different than the usual American/British one (and you can understand why!). This one is great. Give it a try, it is worth it! It's a part of a trilogy so if you've got a chance to try: Sympathy for M. Vengeance, Oldboy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance.- Was this review helpful to you?

Very violent but compelling
By a customer , 28 Feb 2013I don't think I am the target audience for this type of film. It was far too violent for my liking and a disturbing/strange story. Having said that I did watch it all the way through because it is compelling and very well shot. Part of my issue was not being able to empathise with any of the characters giving my experience a voyeuristic viewpoint but perhaps that was the point.- Was this review helpful to you?
