Why bother? Plenty of better versions than this one aroundBy a customer from Thame , 19 Feb 2008
[Highly rated reviewer]I saw the first episode on TV and that was enough. The writer must have thought the story needed to be 'Brought up to date'. It's MEANT to be about Victorian England. Did they really think they could write better than Charles Dickens?

Brilliant MODERN version of a well loved story.By Gingernutski (16 reviews) , 25 Jul 2013Brilliant ADAPTATION (for all those others who wrote a review who seemed to expect it to be like the other ADAPTATIONS) The acting is superb on all counts, the writing is inspired and well though out. Brilliant MODERN version of a well loved story.
Tom Hardy stole the show...againBy a customer , 20 Feb 2012I like the orig Fagan better than this one - However,
saying this - i cannot even recall if fagan was a jew? ??? if he was - i dont think the orig put much focus on this - whereas this version certainly highlighted it more.
Tom Hardy blew me away once again!
He is a fantastic bill sykes as soon as i heard he was cast for this i knew he would nail it. He is better than the orig bill . He made this series what it is ! fantastic!
Not DickensBy a customer , 12 Sep 2011An excellent production - pity it bore so little relation to the spirit of the Dickens book. The adapter admitted she'd never read it before she'd adapted it and it showed. You need to understand more than just the words Dickens was using - his whole focus on the society he observed around him was ignored. However, the acting was good (presuming the cast were doing what the director wanted).
Give me Dickens!By a customer , 05 May 2011While the acting is good to v. good, camera work good, costumes good and some of the sets realistic (even if they don't look like a slum during the close-ups) - and this is why I've given 3 stars - the story line diverts too much from the original as the writer seeks to give it a 'modern' make-over, a certain, soapy feel - one star for the poor modernist approach. As a couple of the production team themselves say (in the bonus material), it'll take a lot to top David Lean's (1948) version. And between these two, David Lean's has it for drama.
Oliver TwistBy a customer from Watford , 29 Jan 2010So lovely to see Tom (Bill) Hardy and Sophie (Nancy) work together again. Tom is certainely one sexy actor(my wife's opnion). Brillant
