A great libretto from Alan Jay Lerner is delivered with gusty force by Barbra Streisand as the Brooklyn goil who regresses to the 19th century while being hypnotised to stop smoking. Vincente Minnelli could direct these musical heart-twangers with his eyes closed, and it does, indeed, look as if he has done just that in some wayward scenes. Yet it is hard to dislike a movie that combines so much talent at full throttle, and features the likes of Yves Montand, Bob Newhart and Jack Nicholson. It's all a bit long-winded, but Minnelli's awesome gifts are deployed in full, especially in the gloriously shot opening sequences.
Romantic musical which tries, and fails, to substitute wispy charm for its original Broadway vitality. There are compensations.
ANY STREISAND FAN NOT SEEN THIS YET, IS IN FOR A TREAT. BEAUTIFUL MUSIC, LUSH SETTINGS, AND SOME GREAT NON-DELIBERATE COMEDIC SEQUENCES MAKE FOR A FILM WHICH WON`T DISAPPOINT. AMONG THE SCORE, TO BE WATCHED FOR, IS `LOVE WITH ALL THE TRIMMINGS`, A LESS-KNOWN STREISAND VEHICLE, WHICH RANKED VERY HIGH IN A POLL OF FAVE STREISAND TRACKS, IN STREISAND`S OWN FANZINE.IT HAUNTS.
WATCH ALSO FOR THE SCENE IN WHICH SHE FALLS INTO A `TRANCE`, IN THE MIDDLE OF A HALLWAY, UNWITTINGLY BEGINNING TO REMOVE HER TIGHTS.THIS IS COMEDY AT ITS BEST:SPONTANEOUS.
SHOWN IN ITS ORIGINAL WIDESCREEN FORMAT, THIS IS WELL WORTH A WATCH, IF NOTHING ELSE TO SEE HOW THE SO-CALLED `UGLY DUCKLING`, FROM CHILDHOOD, BLOSSOMED INTO A TRULY BEAUTIFUL, IF UNCONVENTIONAL, DIVA.
Not the usual. Barbra Streisand's excellent voice and superb acting shines through as usual but she's made better films.
