  • And the 'Greatest Actor Ever (Past, present and future)' Ocar goes to.... Marlon Brando

Most people hate Brando in this role and call him nicknames such as 'mumble mouth' and what not. However, these criticisms are all rubbish. Brando easily confirms his status as the greatest actor of his generation and beyond. He highlights his ability to convey the paradoxical meaning in a character through Terry Malloy in such a way, that we as the audience, are almost drawn into the film. It is as though Brando is expressing his every thought aloud to us. Again, he improvises in much of the scenes, including the famous 'I could've been contender' speech which was all Brando and not directed by Kazan. A true classic masterpiece... hate to say it... but mainly due to Brando himself in his unforgettable role as Terry Malloy.

  • A Genuine Classic

The word 'classic' is used almost as arbitrarily as 'genius' in our modern lexicon, but On the Waterfront is that rare beast: a film that truly merits the classification. Brando's talent is unarguable, and this is one of its finest examples, but this film is more than just a showcase for its star. The performances of the rest of the cast, in particular Rod Steiger, mean that Brando doesn't stand alone in an otherwise mediocre setting. Kazan's direction makes what could have been a traditional gangster movie original, raw and, more than this, very human. This film is recommended to anyone who has the means to play it in their home.

  • A must see for the film buffs

It is always difficult to judge movies made many years ago as comparisons with current standards are inevitable. Technical inadequacies aside, this is a great movie to watch mainly for the outstanding Marlon Brando. The storyline is simple, albeit extremely well directed by Elia Kazan but it does show Brando's class. IMO Brando remains one of the greatest actors of all time, and this is one of the movies which shows why he is such a legend. An absolute must view!

I really enjoyed this film. It's a great mob story with lots of tension and Marlon Brando is excellent. This is going straight on my top list.

  • Over-hyped and average

I really do NOT get all the raving reviews about this film. While Brando is an absolutely beautiful specimen of manhood, the film didn't blow me away at all. I found his acting wooden in places, and only saw some intensity in the final part of the film. Not a thrilling storyline, just found it average all round sorry!!!

This film is knocking on the door of 60 years old. And it shows. It's pretty tame by todays standards but it's still watchable. 3 stars purely on the basis that it's not dated that well.
