This is a brilliant musical about 3 sailors spending a day ashore, some great musical numbers and lots of humour, not to be missed.

  • One of the greatest of all musicals

A film which changed the way everyone looked at screen musicals, as directors Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen convinced the producers at MGM that they could the whole of New York City ('It's a wonderful town') as a backlot. In the end, there's still a good deal of studio work interpolated, but from the opening, dawn scene at the dockyards this film moves like almost no other, with a confidence and brashness that only comes from really talented people working at the top of their game.

You might say that the picture lacks really great songs, or that the colour process isn't perfect (matching studio and location work would prove very difficult for cinematographers for years to come). You might say that it's actually so confident it nearly slips over into arrogance, but, in truth, this is a wonderful film, full of life and surprises (how many musicals have a car chase, for heaven's sake?) and humour.
