Not one of his best films, but Laurence Fishburne is a fabulous actor, who can turn his abilities to any situation.
He plays a character whose ends up in jail due to drug problems, but during his time there, he becomes very friendly with an inmate, who with his poetry re-sites helps him through his sentence, and vows on his release to turn a new leaf. He is paired up with his unlikely white half brother, through his mother, and his half brothers father, who has a drug problem, and needs to fuel it.
Laurence on the other hand feels that he needs to watch over him, at all costs to help him kick the habit, even if this means going against his best friend, and inmate, on the outside world.
