One of the great films...
By cape#1 from LONDON , 16 Nov 2003[Highly rated reviewer]
One of the great films of all time - not just in terms of narrative, but the music, direction and acting is superb. This defines great Westerns and if you're a fan of the genre, you've either seen it and love it or it's next on your list. If you hate Westerns, this is the one to watch - just for Jason Robards, Chalres Bronson and Henry Fonda if nothing else, this is one to rent and cherish.- Was this review helpful to you?

By Eastbourne (17 reviews) , 23 Apr 2013Should be a great film, has an A list cast, brilliant director - but somehow fails to deliver a case of the parts being greater than the sum in this case- Was this review helpful to you?

A film everyone should see at least once
By a customer , 30 Mar 2013Amazingly shot, well performed and brilliantly scored. I am not personally a fan of westerns but great cinematography is great no matter what your tastes. Like most in its genre it is a story told more through actions and looks than words and the camera is the real star of this show. The musical score is also very memorable, with Harmonica's theme in particular sending a chill down the spine.- Was this review helpful to you?

mish-mash of leone films? maybe.
By miller_and_miller (1 review) , 20 Mar 2013Inevitably, 'once upon a time in the west' will be compared to Sergio Leone's 1960s spaghetti westerns for which he is most renowned. The character development is good, much better than in his previous works, the story is engaging and comes to a satisfying conclusion. Making use of a relaxed runtime, the film manages to keep the plot swiftly moving forward with constant developments. The characters' paths cross as their backstories are revealed, allowing you to see both their motivations and to figure out their agendas. Cinematography and music are both brilliant, the western genre tends to bring out the best in both. Ennio Morricone's score is very effective of course, even if it is not as iconic as in 'the good, the bad and the ugly'. Plot and character wise this is mish-mash of older leone westerns. The man with no name stars, except it is Bronson playing him not Eastwood. Certain scenes are very much like those in the original Leone spaghetti western trilogy. Does this make it definitive? Maybe. In summary, a classic western and a classic film if there ever was one even if it is not as memorable as 'the good, the bad, and the ugly'. It just, unfortunately suffers from lack of Eastwood's presence, but not enough to make it a sufficiently lesser film.- Was this review helpful to you?

Once upon a time...I tried watching it.
By jay1002 (2 reviews) , 23 Feb 2013......watched it for 30 minutes...couldn't stand any more of it.. worse than watching paint dry. Appalling acting....loads of very close up 'meaningful' expressions...long silences filled with reverb harmonica....just awful.- Was this review helpful to you?
