Once Upon A Time In The West

Sergio Leone's monumental epic Once Upon A Time In The West ranks among the five or six all-time Western masterpieces. The picture itself is as big as its Monument Valley locations, as grand as its fine, distinguished cast. Henry Fonda plays the blackest character of his long career and he's utterly convincing. He's Frank, the ruthless, murderous psychopath who suffers conscience pangs after annihilating an entire family. Jason Robards is the half-breed falsely accused of the terrible slaughter. Charles Bronson plays the harmonica playing man who remembers how his brother was savagely tortured.

    Powerful epic

I have seen this film a few times, and while I do think it has some minor faults, nevertheless it grabs me every time. Something about the artistic vision of this film, and the painstaking, expert and brilliant realisation of it in every sphere of the production, sets the film head and shoulders above many westerns, and it is certainly equal to the other true classics of the genre. Personally, I feel this has an immensely powerful sense of historical time and place rarely matched in great films of any genre. But even some who like westerns might not like the film and just find it too long and too bizarre. But most who like westerns will be riveted. And for real western fans, it has so much extra depth with inter-woven comment and play upon the history of the genre that it is full of real treats. For me, this film has one the best film gags ever - after that brilliant epic departure by Harmonica looking out the door with the sunlight streaming in, 'Some day', and then Robard's character's 'Yeeeah, well, I gotta be going too'. The film really has so much going on - jokes, great themes, tension, horror, sweeping epic majesty, tenderness, human drama. And the marvellous gritty texture of the whole that binds it all together, the clothes, the vistas, the tense faces, the half collapsing wooden shacks. And the soundtrack is brilliant even without the great score, the thuds and clanks and creaks and groans and long empty spaces. And that music! And don't even get me started on the acting! The director, whassisname, thingy, is one the few directors who managed to bring out the great poetry of Bronson's acting. And Fonda shows he's one of the real all time great actors, (those furtive, shifting looks of Frank's). Well, I like the film. It has so much. Some minor problems here and there perhaps, but it's way big enough to cope with them. A real treat. Is it one the best westerns ever made? For me, yes, definitely. One the best ever films, period. I actually find it moving, there's a great tenderness at its core, and I think the love story that emerges is immensely sad and very poignant in the context of everything else the movie is talking about. In short - brilliant, brilliant, briliant. Watch it. Hope you enjoy it. You should certainly give it a go just in case it hits home with you, cos if so then its super treaty.

Once Upon a Time in the West

    • 21 Jul 2009

Nobody could make something out of nothing the way that Sergio Leone could. Just look at the first ten minutes of Once Upon a Time in the West: a fistful of tough hombres in ankle-length dusters are waiting for a train at a railway depot out in the middle of nowhere. Their faces are familiar yet strange: Woody Strode and Jack Elam are veteran Hollywood cowboys, with dozens of movies under their belts. But they have never been filmed like this before, gazed at so long or so longingly. Leone... Read more
