A masterpiece
By thesman from Lanarkshire , 23 Aug 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
I cannot recommend this film highly enough. Gritty and violent, this masterpiece shows the violent underbelly and social disaffection of a dysfunctional Maori working class family. Wonderful acting, blistering fight scenes and some heart rending emotional scenes.
A must see...- Was this review helpful to you?

Awful Cast.
By Tranced (135 reviews) from Bridlington , 09 Dec 2012First scene then pressed stop button. The cast were just too painful for me. Direction just awful for human consumption. Simple.- Was this review helpful to you?

Alcohol fuelled domestic violence, Maori style
By mj55 (95 reviews) , 01 May 2012Domestic violence is probably much the same wherever you go and certainly you could pretty easily get the same message across with a non-Maori cast. As others have observed it is not that easy to watch. The violence is sudden and largely triggered by what seem to be minor things, blown up large through excessive alcohol. But it's the vicious cycle aspect that most depresses. You sit there just hoping that Jake will see the light sometime and not automatically resort to using his fists to uphold his pride and prove his masculine superiority as head of the family. However you just know that he's probably doomed and there is nothing that anyone can do about it. Powerful filmmaking with an excellent cast.- Was this review helpful to you?

Patronising and stereotypical
By Dacey (5 reviews) from Richmond , 07 Mar 2012I found the characters stereotyped. The theme was patronising, and the development of the storyline sentimental. Some of the things that happened were not believable, and the violence - while admittedly part of the story - was excessive.- Was this review helpful to you?
