What is happening to Cinema?
By blacksmoke (21 reviews) from London, England , 22 Sep 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
If nothing else, One Deadly Summer is an effective example of how Hollywood's increasing ambivalence towards writers and story-telling is contributing to the global 'dumbing-down' in today's media.
The familiar story of rape and revenge is presented here in a complex, emotive and realistic manner, with an outstanding performance by Isabelle Adjani (perhaps better known today for her role in La Reine Margot). The Director Jean Becker sensibly offered the characters time and space to evolve on screen, ensuring the audience is given an opportunity to feel emotionally connected to the story.
One Deadly Summer is an increasingly rare example of how a simple idea can result in powerful Cinema if the film-makers are given creative freedom. Any attempt at a remake would would no doubt result in heavily edited scenes to accommodate 'test screenings' and 'market demographic' (and the inevitable clear moral conclusion that Hollywood loves so much).
If your attention span can accommodate more than 97 minutes viewing without special effects, this film will move you. Isn't that a refreshing change?- Was this review helpful to you?

(28)Don't Bother
By a customer from Guildford , 04 Jan 2011I first saw Isabelle Adjani in Subway. That's a very long way from this film. It would have helped if the roles encouraged some sympathy, but ..no. Yes, Ms Adjani has a beautiful body but ...when nudity occurred it was unexpected and irrelevant to the story. And it is long....(or just tedious?). The film doesn't pick up pace until most films are coming to a close. The ending...a cop-out. I wish I hadn't spent the time. Any redeeming aspects? A picture of French village life in the early 80's maybe (only going by the hairstyles here), and a lovely restored classic car....- Was this review helpful to you?

One Depressing evening
By wrightman (93 reviews) from Maidstone , 18 May 2009Isabelle Adjani is the main reason for watching this film. She is very attractive but plays a moody character who is not very sympathetic. The story shows how terrible suffering leads to future problems. The ending is very downbeat and does not leave the viewer with a sense of catharsis. It is an interesting film but it fails to satisfy.- Was this review helpful to you?
