One Magic Christmas

Christmas is a time of enchantment... when a wondrous feeling, larger than life, captures the soul...but not for everyone.

Academy Award-Winner Mary Steenburgen, stars as a young mother, Ginny Grainger, who is disillusioned with Christmas and finds its approach as adding only more pressures to an already stress-filled existence. Thanks to the unshakable faith of her young daughter, Abbie, and a guardian angel named Gideon (played by Harry Dean Stanton), Ginny's spirit of hope and Christmas is re-kindled through a miraculous yuletide experience in which she sees what life would be like if Christmas did not exist.

One suspects that the intention here was to put a modern slant on the Dickens tale A Christmas Carol. But quite how her husband's redundancy, impending homelessness and bankruptcy are supposed to rekindle the Christmas spirit in housewife Mary Steenburgen is anybody's guess. It takes a huge leap of faith for anyone to believe that an angel with an uncanny resemblance to Harry Dean Stanton can do much to rectify the situation, but this is Disney, so prepare for take off. Earnestly played and efficiently directed by Philip Borsos, but far too downbeat for the festive season.

    • Radio Times
  • Decidedly downbeat Christmas fantasy: daddy gets drowned, mother is a nut, and the angel looks like a tramp. Santa Claus puts in an appearance for a happy finale, but It's a Wonderful Life should sue for plagiarism.
