splendid.... those were the days.. It's great to not forget how the british press consistently try to sabotage our world cup preparations, demonise our fans and undermine our manager and squad.

  • This is how not to make a documentary

A rotten, lazy documentary that had nothing much to say about Italia 90. The film did little more than mix a quiet soundtrack from 1990 with some media footage of the World Cup. There were no new or interesting retrospectives given by fans or players as to what it was like to be at Italia 90. The decision to interrupt the original match footage with naff shots of actors' legs dribbling the ball was anti-football (the beautiful game?). At the dizzy moment of a memorable goal being scored the editor chose instead to switch to a generic shot of a ball ruffling the back of an empty net. Truly awful! It was like watching a football match and then getting a transmission cut at the crucial moment a goal is scored (so a bit like watching a big game on ITV!). It had nothing intelligent to say about the state of England in 1990 or the reasons for football hooliganism. Worse, there was an attempt to suggest a meaningful link between the Poll Tax riots in March 1990 and football hooliganism. What was this link exactly? Lazy, lazy, lazy!

  • Starts well but let down by the awful game footage

Documentary remembering Italia 90 and England’s meteoric rise to the Semi Final despite all the negativity around.

I was really looking forward to this and it starts off well, charting the problems both on and off the field that English football was having and the press, as usual, giving the England manager a hard time.

All this is backed up by the songs of 1990 and voiced over by the excellent Gary Oldman which it certainly gets the nostalgia across very well.

Where it falls down badly is when it gets to the actual games.

Rather than keeping with the original footage, it intersperses actors in the team colours re-enacting the moments or a ball hitting the woodwork which makes it look cheap and loses the momentum of the occasion.

Even though I’ve seen the games several times, someone who hadn’t might have been left feeling “what actually happened there?”

The should have got the people who made Senna to do it as that’s how you make a sports documentary.

Sent shivers down my spine... Really enjoyed the views from the fans, Media and players. Loved how England stuck 2 fingers up at the media and came so close to going all the way. Then coming home, fans and players celebrating as if we won it... Come on England!
