  • Strange & Intense

If you're looking for an easy going movie then look again, this film is intense from the outset. As with most of Ralph Fiennes' films it is rather dark and brooding. The acting is all top form, however the plot isn't, it continually jumps from place to place and backward and forward in time. If you take your eyes from the screen for more than a minute you'll be lost!

If you are not a staunch Ralph Fiennes fan then I wouldn't recommend it. However, if you are into dark, brooding, melodramas with great cinematography then this is the film for you.

  • Ralph, Martha and Magnus Fiennes: it's a family affair!

Ralph plays Onegin, Martha directs and Magnus is the composer....a Fiennes family affair. I only rented this as I'll watch anything Ralph is in (even Maid in Manhattan) because he has an intense sensuality I just can't shake. This is a tale of timing really....Liv Tyler tells Ralph she loves him but he dismisses her as too young....6 years later he bumps into her again but she's married.....and he's the one in love...the film is brilliantly directed by Martha....but if you're after beautiful prose, read the book by Pushkin....

  • Intensely Russian

A changed and compressed version of the classic by Pushkin, but nonetheless a very good film with excellent editing and cinematography. The background music fitted perfectly as well and the acting was intense and moving. As for the aristocratic setting, no wonder the revolution was only a few years away.

Beautifully acted by Fiennes, Tyler. and Stevens. Rather broody and dark at times. These types of films are what Fiennes is all about. Not much of a story but then It's a Russian classic.

  • Dry, uninspired, turgid and dull

Read the film's description carefully, because that is the whole of the story. It is the whole of the film also.

Reading other reviewers, I can only surmise that there is a big market for watching paint dry.

  • Exceptional!

Pushkin is to the Russians, what Dickens is to th English. I saw this as an opera and thought it would be unequalled, but was delighted with the subtle complexities of the Russian character, where pride and honour are everything. Exceptional world cinema!
