Director Chris Columbus took a break from the juvenile slapstick of the Home Alone series to make this understated little gem. It's a sweet, rather old-fashioned comedy about a shy policeman, John Candy, who falls for an equally bashful mortician, Ally Sheedy, much to the dismay of his overbearing mother, Maureen O'Hara. Although it occasionally lapses into sentimentality, it is sympathetically written and there are winning performances from the two leads. However, the film is all but stolen by O'Hara, returning to the big screen after a lengthy absence, and that other wily old veteran, Anthony Quinn. Look out, too, for a brief cameo from Columbus's Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin.

    Charming and Funny

Danny is a cop who always puts his family first, but has to learn to let go if he wants to marry the girl of his dreams. This doesn't sound like anything special, but the cast make it so.

Candy is true to his usual form, though more subtle. O'Hara is hilarious as the over bearing, minipulative mother, and it's worth watching for her alone. This is a great film for a relaxing evening at home, I'd recommend it to anyone.
