  • Simple yet rewarding tale of friendship and honour authentically steered in from the Wild West.

    [Highly rated reviewer]

When cattle grazers Boss Spearman and Charley Waite (Robert Duval and Kevin Costner) find themselves under attack from aggravated landowner and general scumbag Denton Baxter (Michael Gambon), they decide it's about time someone stood up against the unscrupulous rulers of a small town in the American West. Unable to count on corrupt local Sheriff Poole (James Russo), the duo look to oppressed locals for support, most notably that of Doctor Barlow and his sister Sue (Annette Bening). Open Range celebrates a return to form for director Costner who for once is happy to share his screen time with old favourite Duval in this slow-burning, often touching tale of loyalty and belief. It might not convert those who generally avoid the genre, but for Western aficionados and those with an eye for quality film making, Open Range is as rewarding an experience as has rolled into your creaky old town in quite some time. Quality gunfight, too...

  • A Western with more heart than action

    Rated - 4.0 stars
By yodaunleashed (5 reviews) from North West , 11 Oct 2012
Here is a Western with more heart than action (though there's plenty of that too). It starts off perhaps a little lethargically, as our characters are shown to be actual cowboys rather than the fictional gunslingers that archetype has come to represent (though in the end, they prove more than handy with a rifle and pistol). It soon picks up pace as the straightforward yet satisfying plot catches up with the characters, and very compelling characters they are at that, wonderfully acted by Costner and especially Duvall, who steals the show frankly.

These two old friends have some genuinely funny and heart-warming moments and it’s their relationship which lies at the heart of the film, even though it tries to distract us with a delicately handled romance that no less feels like it has a forced bygone conclusion. The finale gunfight is rough and messy, rather than precise and calculating and feels far truer to life (or at least what I imagine it to be like, I’ve never been in a gunfight myself) than most western shootouts. It retains all its excitement nonetheless and only the slightly limp epilogue sullies its impact.

Overall, this is a worthwhile film with some great performances and some standout moments and scenes, but it just falls short of greatness with the well-acted but still forced romance and the lack of antagonist development.

  • Decent story, awful dialogue

    Rated - 2.5 stars

I was dubious at first, because I have to say I'm not the biggest fan of Kevin Costner. But, when I saw the first shot - a group of cowboys herding cattle in some very beautiful countryside, my hopes were raised...only to be dashed by the sheer dreadfulness of the dialogue. The actors do their best with it, and the film carries along well enough. Picks up considerably toward the end with an absolutely terrific third act shootout in glorious time-honoured fashion (except for occasional gratuitous slow-motion shots). But then, the epilogue of the film falls back into even more badly written lines than before. The film ends on the line: 'Let's go get our cows.' Which just about says it all.

  • Very slow starting

Beautiful scenery with a good cast but extremely slow at getting to the interesting bits. An excellent gunfight towards the end which is very well done and quite realistic.

  • An old fashioned western

    Rated - 4.0 stars
By Aspman (82 reviews) from Scotland , 22 Mar 2010
An old fashioned film in some ways. The opening is slow and takes time to build and the film is all the better for it. Time is taken to establish the characters and the setting with a very green prairy the backdrop rather than the more familiar desert and scrubland.

The story slow builds up to the climax of a really strong and viceral gunfight. The ending is also quite old fashioned in that all lose ends are tidied up and time is taken to show you just how things will end. A very satisfying film. Costner might have his critics but he knows how to do a western.
