Cary Grant and Tony Curtis star as naval officers in this service comedy, one of the director's favorite genres. When Adm. Matt Sherman's (Grant) submarine, the Sea Tiger, is damaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor, he needs to find spare parts to have it recommissioned. Into the breach steps aide Lt. Nick Holden (Curtis), a master con man and wheeler-dealer who begins scheming to acquire the materials needed to fix the sub while the appalled Sherman looks the other way. Once the sub is deemed seaworthy, they stop at an island where Holden picks up a couple of Filipino families and five navy nurses who have been stranded there. The arrival of the extremely attractive nurses in the sub's cramped quarters has the predicted effect on the young, all-male crew, who soon find concentrating on their work to be an impossible task. The women also have their own ideas about the renovation of the submarine, one of which involves painting it pink. Despite the dated 1950s gender stereotypes, the comic genius of Grant and the energy of Curtis, in addition to a script witty enough to have been nominated for an Academy Award, keep the film afloat. Among the talented cast are Dick Sargent, Arthur O'Connell, Dina Merrill, Gene Evans, and Gavin McLeod, who would later return to the seas as the captain of THE LOVE BOAT.

This wonderfully wacky wartime comedy teams those two great farceurs Cary Grant and Tony Curtis in their only movie together; ironically (or intentionally, since Grant produced), it was made immediately following Curtis's take-off of Grant in Some Like It Hot. Here Grant plays a submarine commander trying to keep his ropey old vessel in the water with the help of wheeler-dealer junior officer Curtis. Complications arise as the sub takes on board a number of unorthodox passengers, among them a group of sexy nurses. Grant is brilliant, with every reaction immaculately timed. Pink Panther director Blake Edwards ensures no gag is missed, and the whole is a deliciously tasteless joy.
Despite the fortuitous teaming of Grant and Curtis - as the commander of a creaking World War II submarine determined... read more on Time Out

Is it possible that there is a film comedy that can be set out during a war? The answer is YES! However it takes a brilliant story line and film legends like Carry Grant and Tony Curtis to pull it off. The movie set out during WWII, and shows our brave sailors trying to make their contribution to the war effort, only to be brought to their knees by the war itself. Enter Tony Curtis (LTJG Holden), a young, energetic sailor whose life is temporarily altered due to this unforced war. Given the chance to assist in the war effort, Carry Grant empowers his new Supply Officer to obtain the necessary parts and supplies to get the USS STINGRAY underway and back into the war. Through unconventional methods, LTJG Holden finds that in confusion, there is profit and sets out to get what the captain needs and a bit more. Wonderful movie, one of the very best classic of comedies for the entire family to enjoy. Rated 4 stars.
