A wonderful surprise
By a customer from London, England , 25 Jan 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
I was sceptical about this one; still, I enjoy Donald Sutherland and Robert Redford as a director is usually a good omen. But the movie is much better than I had thought. The story, the acting, and the direction -- all is great. This is a story about a family who is coming to grips with the death of their older son and the troubles their younger son is facing. The movie is much more about this teenager (unbelievably good acting by Tim Hutton!), on the verge of suicide. A must-see for anyone who loves movies like 'Shawshank Redemption' or 'Green Mile'.- Was this review helpful to you?

(41)Shallow cod psychology
By sailonby (108 reviews) from Exeter , 30 Jan 2013The acting is satisfactory but the film is a rather shallow, guilt-ridden psychological drama of the type beloved by Americans. The monstrously selfish mother is unconvincing and the 'I blame myself' motif has been done to death. Oh! and people who sail dinghies don't usually take to the water without knowing how to deal with a capsize, and dinghies don't float upside down unless you've stuck your mast in the mud.- Was this review helpful to you?

Unmissable - provided you have feelings
By a customer , 11 Nov 2012One of my all-time favourites, great tension, which works out well and not-so-well simultaneously. The choice of music puts it in a class above.- Was this review helpful to you?

absolutely brilliant
By quintus (52 reviews) from Witney , 30 Nov 2011I love this film. It peels back the layers of an ordinary, unhappy family and shows us the pain and fear behind their unhappiness. Redford is fearless about portraying pain but he paints these delicate emotions on ivory: there isn't a single dud note in it and the acting, from every single person in it, is superb.- Was this review helpful to you?

Laborious but watchable
By a customer , 30 Jun 2011This isn't an easy watch. It proves to me the truth of the saying that behind everyone in therapy, there is another who needs to be. I won't spoil it for you, so you'll have to watch it to see what I mean.
The film tells a story of very realistic family life. There is lovely cinemaphotography and the lead actors play their roles well.
I'm glad I watched it.
It leaves an impression, despite the rather abrupt but apt ending.- Was this review helpful to you?

Very good
By Lauren Edwards from Middlesex, , 19 May 2011My Mum recommended this to me and I really enjoyed it. I loved the relationship between the psychiatrist and patient and how much you hate the Mum but then actually end up feeling sorry for her. Its a brilliant film and quite different.- Was this review helpful to you?
