  • Orfeo Ed Euridice shows its age.

This Orfeo Ed Euridice is a stage production. It begins with Janet Baker carefully explaining the story. The start of the opera is very long winded with Janet Baker taking the male role of Ofreo which leads to visual and sonic confusion throughout the opera. To draw you in some of the visual effects and costumes of the people that inhabit hell are very artistic.

A distraction is the God of love dangling on a rope in a pink dress with pink wings but she does sing well. To sum up the production shows its 1982 age and the DVD has nothing special to offer.

This is a good performance musically and in the staging. Defects if any are minor and the opera contains some very attractive and moving moments. Another performance listed is significantly shorter and some might prefer cuts in some sections, though I enjoyed this version.
