Most helpful review Orlando

  • Evocative, exotic and thought provoking film

Orlando is a beautiful construct of stunning imagery woven around a fantastical tale.

It tells the tale of an androgynous being called Orlando who ceases to age after making a pact with Elizabeth I. the story is based on a novel by Virginia Woolf and is consequently quirky, surreal and emotionally wraught in equal measure.

It is however the cinematography and composition that rises this film to a thing of wonder and beauty. You could pause the film at almost any point and it would make an amazing painting. Sally Potter has put so much detail and energy into creating the visual splendour, it makes you feel as if your are floating through a dream.

Tilda Swinton's portrayal of Orlando is quite unique and deserved on the praise that was heaped on her at the time.

Orlando is an evocative, exotic and thought provoking film that really needs to be seen to be believed.

This film disappointed me although the sets were magnificent and the acting really good. I had hoped for a more fulfilling story through the film. I thought the idea behind the story fascinating and believed so much more could have been made of the film.

  • Four sumptuous centuries in 90 minutes

Lavish, sumptuous, playful, stunningly shot, with some divine music, and with two intrigueing cameo performances by Jimmy Somerville and one by Quentin Crisp. If this well-paced trawl through gender and history leaves you a little puzzled, remember it's an adaptation of a deeply personal book by Virginia Woolf - a quick Google will enlighten you.

Tilda Swinton is just extraordinary here.

  • Orlando. Wuz says Dreadful

    Rated - 0.5 stars

Having read some Critics and reviews I had high hopes for this film

However only managed to watch for about 50 mins before switching to synchronised swimming from the Arctic.

Good acting? Not that I noticed. Story line? What story line?

Best bit? The Russian Princess was pretty and the ice skates were interesting.

    I give this a minus 5 rating

I'm open to any kind of cinema that is different, imaginative, unusual or a little idiosyncratic. 'ORLANDO' was all of these things; it was also one of the most self-indulgent and tedious films I have ever seen. Yes, the costumes and the settings are sumptious and the theme intriguing, but I just couldn't get on with it. As somebody with infinite amounts of patience, it's a bad sign when I feel the need to picture search at x32 before I die of terminal boredom. It felt like Derek Jarman on overload, some sort of homosexual in-joke to which I was, thankfully, excluded.

The icing on the very bitter-sweet cake was an end scene where Orlando is sitting under a tree, feeling very pleased with herself; in the sky is a bizarre, golden-winged, ridiculous looking Jimmy Summerville as some sort of queer angel, singing to her. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I think I did a bit of both.

Cinematography beautiful, costumes, sets, photography and locations brilliant - story and dialogue complete rubbish. Poor actors did the best they could!
