Adapted from Peter Carey's Booker Prize-winning novel, this story about two Victorian eccentrics with a passion for gambling was never going to be an easy choice to make into a film. Director Gillian Armstrong was undaunted, but unfortunately the end result is an irritating and generally incomprehensible art movie. Anglican minister Ralph Fiennes's wager to heiress Cate Blanchett that he can transport a glass chapel across the Australian outback is reminiscent of Klaus Kinski hauling a boat overland in director Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo, but this is far stranger and much less spectacular. Story of two misfits who fall in love. .....
Extremly touhing, romantic & tragic. .....
A beautiful film. .....
The scenery is incredible, the photography is stunning & what a marvelous glass church. ..... Cate & Ralph are perfect as obsessive & compulsive gamblers. ..... Everybody contributes to it's enjoyment. .....
If you like period dramas you will love this. .....
It should have won so many awards but sadly the much inferior 'Titanic' was around at the same time.
I read the book and was blown away by the very talented Peter Carey. Obviosuly I wanted to see the film after reading the book. Although the book is always better than the film, I found the film very entertaining to watch.
Cate Blanchett was spot on in her role of Lucinda. She was exactly how I imagined Lucinda to be.
The film was unbelievable in the sense that it stayed very close to the narrative of the book.
Very impressed. It loses 2 stars because it not a tense film nor does the plots keep you on the edge. But then period drama are very unlikely to be that.
