No film, however well directed, photographed and acted, can compete with the written word when the writer is as brilliant as Peter Carey. In 'Oscar and Lucinda' he created such wonderfully imaginative descriptons that in that respect, any film is bound to fall short.
The epic journey and the glass church, for instance, have been pretty much etched on my memory for the past ten years ever since reading the book, and I must say, I was less than transported by the screen version. I had imagined it as so much more of an amazing feat, so much longer and harder.
Fiennes and Blanchett, however, are almost beyond reproach no matter what roles they play, so I didn't have much to grumble about there. Perhaps there was little too much 'soppiness' in their relationship, but I think that was mainly down to Fiennes overplaying his part.
If I hadn't read the book I'm sure I would have enjoyed it more.As the saying goes, comparisons are odious. But it was a brave attempt to film an almost unfilmable story.
