The 2001 Berlin production is an effective updating with an impressive modernist set on a revolve changing from harbour master's building to luxurious palace, with swimming pool. Barenboim's conducting brings out the full range and expressiveness of the score of an often implausible plot (can Otello really get so uptight about a handkerchief?) and Alexajeev is a wonderfully evil Iago on sun lounger with dark glasses. Franz as Otello and Magee as Desdemona are moving at their great climax.es. The choice of ratio - no wide-screen - was a minor disappointment, but no more.
