Malcolm Mowbray made a beautifully funny directing debut, A Private Function, from Alan Bennett's script about a black market pig. Mowbray then went to Hollywood and came a real cropper with this second meaty comedy. Originally titled Stiffs, it lay on a marble slab for two years before it was released as Out Cold. It's a tale of two butchers, with the long-suffering John Lithgow thinking he has killed his loathsome partner, Bruce McGill, by locking him in the freezer. In fact, McGill's wife, Teri Garr, has done the deed after hiring private eye Randy Quaid. Macabre is the word for it and like tripe, it's an acquired taste.
