I watched this film with growing disbelief - and amusement too. A group of American soldiers and a priest are caught up in the blast. I think we are supposed to worry that they might not be ok (they are wholesome moral well fed American boys in an alien land after all) and feel tearful as the priest reverently collects up religous items which were knocked off the table.
Then the Japanese on the ground realise what good people they really are and all want to convert to Catholicism.
