Carl Franklin and Denzel Washington team-up once more for this hilariously refreshing noir thriller. Washington is Matt Lee Whitlock, police chief of a small Florida town just outside of Miami. In the process of getting a divorce from the woman he still loves, Alex (the sultry Eva Mendes), Chief Whitlock has begun to have an affair with Anne (Sanaa Lathan), wife of abusive ex-football quarterback Chris Harrison (Dean Cain). When he learns that Anne has terminal cancer and doesn't have long to live, Whitlock's stupidity gets the better of him. He steals $450,000 cash that is waiting to be sent to the feds in order to help her out. But when both Anne and Chris's dead bodies are discovered the next morning, all of the signs point to Whitlock. As the clamps begin to tighten and the excuses begin to crumble, Whitlock must use his cunning to track down the money and clear his name once and for all. Gleefully subverting typical film noir conventions, first-time screenwriter David Collard's script is an utter delight. Featuring outstanding supporting turns from Lathan and Mendes, OUT OF TIME is a rollicking ride through the swampy haze of southern Florida.

"...Punches way above its weight... Director Carl Franklin keeps the tension bubbling..."
Out of Time, star Washington and director Franklin's first collaboration since the under-rated Devil in a Blue Dress, is one of those thrillers where you can't believe the main protagonist can be so gullible or stupid.
Washington plays a small-town Chief of Police who gets himself embroiled in one of the easiest scams to spot this side of the Nigerian bank Internet scam. Not only does he put himself in the frame for murder, but he also, without so much as a second thought, gives away evidence money to the scammers.
But it's okay, because he's played by good old Denzel, and we all know Denzel is a good guy at heart; here he's just been misled by someone he trusts (though isn't that the point of a good scam?). The complex moralities which could have been employed are left on the shelf marked 'not considered by the writer'. Especially as Mendes plays the investigating detective who also happens to be Denzel's estranged wife. The possibilities are largely ignored.
What we're left with is a slick little thriller that you'll have forgotten about half an hour after seeing it. It ticks along, and there's some pleasure to be had from watching Denzel squirm as the net closes in on him, but ultimately, this is no more exciting or compelling than most other thrillers around at the moment.
The film takes a while to get going as the director insists on highlighting each clue to the twists of the plot - he does everything except put subtitles underneath the key scenes saying 'PAY ATTENTION THIS IS IMPORTANT LATER IN THE FILM'. I also struggled with Washington's character. He is as cool as ever as the chief of police, however for someone that high up in law enforcement he comes across as being completely stupid and gullible.
Enough of the negatives; I actually enjoyed the film. It was beautifully set and shot. What the director managed brilliant was the pace and tension in the last third of the film.
In the hands of a better director this film could have been a classic. Unfortunately as it is it's entertaining but forgettable.
The Fast And The Furious 3 has found itself a director, with the announcement that indie director Justin Lin will take control of the racing car film. However, neither Vin Diesel nor Paul Walker, stars from the first two Fast And The Furious movies, will feature in the third instalment. Producer Neal Moritz will once again oversee proceedings, having also worked recently on xXx: State Of The Union, Torque and Out Of Time. Lin is currently finishing off Annapolis, a drama starring Tyrese, Donnie Read more
