This is not Carol Reed worthy of The Third Man and Odd Man Out. This is not Trevor Howard of Brief Encounter and Roots of Heaven. And particularly not Ralph Richardson (looking way too young) of Things to Come, The Heiress, Richard III, and Long Day's Journey. George Coulouris is his canny self. Robert Morley is typically grotesque and Wendy Hiller is wasted. The new girl Kerima is made to keep her mouth shut so we don't get to hear her French accent.
The whole mess is overlong and instantly repulsive...
and yet there's some lessons there in bad movie-making. And it's a reminder that Joseph Conrad probably wrote the central relationship with great dark depth.- Was this review helpful to you?
