Can't believe the other reviews here, if you have enjoyed any of Beat Takeshi's other crime films there is no reason not to enjoy this one. His visceral flair and storytelling are all present and correct. The story is captivating and the visuals have his trademark bleak beauty. so ignore previous reviews if this kind of thing floats your boat then sit back and enjoy

A nice addition to Takeshi Kitano's Yakuza movies. He plays his usual type of character, seemingly calm and in control, but eventually erupting into violent rage. The stylish, brutal bloodletting has his brushstroke all over it. Not 'Violent Cop', I agree, but great stuff, really enjoyed it.

If you've enjoyed this style of work From Takeshi Kitano before. There's a good chance you'll enjoy this convoluted and sometimes confusing Yakusa tale. Think Reservoir Dogs Meets Carlito's Way filmed in the style of Violent Cop (Sono otoko, kyôbô ni tsuki).

  • Unfortunately not what was expected

I concluded to the fact that this film is below standard in comparison to some of the older Takeshi movies. As many have reviewed here the story is somewhat dry and convoluted to the point where you just want to get this film over and done with. It is barely watchable if you like Yakuza and the violence that goes with it but don't expect to be blown away by it - in fact pretty far from it.

Low production values plus it was confusing to sort out who was who in the warring clans making this a sub-standard Kitano film.

Somewhere in the background was a good story but it was difficult to follow what was going on for most of the time. As the film progesses that story starts to take second place to an increasingly pointless slaughter of bit part actors who's only contribution to the film is to die in a hail of bullets. Indeed, many of them seem to make their first and only appearance on the screen just moments before their extended, jerking dance of death as the bullets tear into them. More often than not I found myself asking 'who was that?' as the body sank to the ground in a pool of blood. Was it the film or just the early signs of senility on my part?
