  • Brutal and gripping

Algerian film with subtitles. A well paced portrayal of events in the 1945 to 1955 period when Algeria strived to gain independence from France. It centres on two brothers who set up a gang of freedom fighters in Paris with a third brother pursuing his dream of managing the first Algerian Boxing Champion. The film jumps unevenly through the years without proper explanation but the strong direction and excellent performances from all three lead actors and their arch rival the National Security chief keep you gripped. It does not refrain from the brutality of the French towards the Algerians in their efforts to control insurrection.

French/Algerian film that follows the fortunes of three brothers caught up in the Algerian war of independence on the French mainland. If you love good acting - watch this. If you enjoy an epic plot - watch this, If you enjoy gangster films - watch this. The story takes you from Algeria in 1945 through a turbulent period in French history. whether or not it's accurate isn't relevant as this film is simply superb. Roschdy Zem's performance is the pivotal one in this film and is worth watching for him alone. A fine follow up from Rachid Bouchareb to Days of Glory

My husband and I thought this was an extremely absorbing and well-designed film. It deserves an Oscar as do the lead actors. A very credible and well-paced film. Hats off all round.

  • The French are still denying the 1945 massacre...

Although some parts of this film are imaginary but they reflect the reality of the brutal war against Algeria. The French killed around 45000 in May 1945 and this figure was first given by the American Ambassador to France at the time. It was this massacre which triggered the first bullet in Novemver 1954 against the colonialism and for the independence. The Film was nearly perfect from all viewpoints. The substance was excellent. The French did not like it for obvious reasons - they are still denying their crimes. The film deserves an oscar.

  • Worthwhile viewing with gripping storyline

    Rated - 3.5 stars

I thought this film covered the period of Algeria's struggle to become free from French colonial rule with a gripping storyline. It demonstrates that different factions can emerge and the resulting in-fighting can cause dreadful complications and retribution. There are interesting contrasts between the brothers as each one makes their own choices and then has to face the consequences. A justifiably long film but there are no periods of drag in the action, each scene is necessary to the plot. The film is worthwhile viewing as it broadens your mind to consider the issues of nationalism and political struggle. Also, it does not make out that any one side has all the right answers or justification.
