The hyper-real compu-visuals are gorgeous....Any 'tooner stands or falls on its characters, and here they're an endearing, cheering bunch, larnyxed with aplomb... 4 stars out of 5

Excellent, excellent, EXCELLENT! Very funny & entertaining......for kids and adults alike! And the script, screenplay and animation are all first class. I've grown a bit tired of these sort of movies in recent years, but I'll put this in my top three alongside Shrek & Monsters Inc. Highly recommended!!
You can't really go wrong with 'Over The Hedge'. This is a great film for all the family - obviousley kids of all ages will adore it....cute characters with zany antics and comedy faces. As ever there are various themes that adults will quickly pick up on but the kids will miss (ah, the innocence of childhood!) .... we all recognise the pushy and unbearable neighbourhood co-ordinator type and the overwieght balding jobsworth white van man, which provide equally as many laughs as the main animal based characters. The film is less than 1 1/2 hours in total, which is a bonus as animated features (no matter how good they are) become mind-numbing after too long. Another plus is the host of recognisable voice actors used for the main characters. Get your popcorn and fizzy drinks, grab a bean bag, relax and enjoy!
I'm not really a fan of animated movies, I find it hard to concentrate on them but my girlfriend on the other hand love's them so I got talked into watching this and to my great surprised it was really good I don't think there was any point where I lost concentration, it was hilarious all the way though, I would actually watch it again and probably even buy it, great for a light entertainment evening, to suit all ages. Must see
I really recommend seeing this movie. It is really funny! The speech Bruce Willis' character RJ makes about humans and their eating habits is just so true to life.
The dreamworks team have worked hard on this and it shows. The animals have characteristics true to their real life counterparts as well.
Hammy the squirrel really makes the movie.
very funny enjoyable film for all the family.

Ok, so you see cartoon and you think 'kids movie!'. You're right to think that. But, hang on... Shrek's also a kids movie but it works for those of us over 12. So does Over The Hedge! There are moments in this film of absolute laugh out loud comedy. The story is well written and you really start to feel for the characters (you'll learn never to let a squirrel drink Red Bull for example). Go see it, or if you miss it rent it you'll love it!
Great movie!! I took my kids to see this and we were holding our sides with laughter. My 9 year old thoroughly enjoyed it, but just as entertaining for adults. Can't recommend this enough.
My daughter loved this film and even my husband and I found it entertaining enough to sit through 5 or 6 times. It makes you think about the environment whilst still being funny.
Loved this film. For both young and old. I was weary to start with as I was concerned that this type of film is being done so much this days, but it was good with lots of funny bits.
A great family movie to unwind with at the end of a busy week: very well produced and very, very funny! A 'must' !
1: The story and writing is... good. Not awesome, but entertaining and often very funny.
2: The voice acting is fantastic.
3: The action sequences are awesome and funny.
4: The visuals... are out of this world. Or maybe that should be 'into this world', for the amazing thing, apart from the sheer amount of detail, is how photographic they are. You might not notice because the story is engrossing, but if you watch it a second time (the commentary track is good), take note of the light. They have very deliberately made the light look like the real world, including making sun-drenched details in the background be almost washed out (as in the picture above), and big blocks of things in the shade, etc. The light coming through semi-translucent objects like the turtle's shell is gorgeous.
The way they use 'tele lenses' and 'wide angle lenses' (of course it is all data in a computer, but they can program everything to simulate the real world, including camera positions and what lenses to use...) is amazing. The space is so convincing.
Of course this is a comedy aimed at the family market. (Read: basically for children, but we hope the adults will enjoy it too.) But the amazing progress of talent, skill, and technology displayed here make me very optimistic about future CGI films for adults, like SF and fantasy. It is getting very hard to imagine what can't be done any more, given a good budget. (And the budget necessary shrinks every years as hardware and software progresses.)
Actually I think that the main reason almost all the CGI films so far have been family films is that the big problem is making really convincing humans. The humans are getting very good, but they still look a bit like dolls. Not the best thing for a serious film. But it'll get there.
This is a great family film. The kids will enjoy the story which has some bits that are nail-biting, sad or funny. Like many kids films nowadays there are jokes that only the adults will understand which makes watching cartoons so much more tolerable. This is one you could watch a second time.
