    [Highly rated reviewer]

Prior to viewing 'Overnight' I had read positive broadsheet and magazine reviews promising that this documentary would show the truth about fickleness of Hollywood and the brittleness of the American Dream in its charting of the rapid rise and fall of the young barkeeper turned film director Troy Duffy. On one level the films succeeds in conveying the reality of newcomer trying to keep body and soul together in Hollywood whilst promising his team thicker and thicker spreadings of 'jam tomorrow' but, I still felt somewhat shortchanged. The truth is it was was almost immediately obvious the main protangonist would be doomed to failure and the movie therefore lost much of its power for me. Troy is not so much the victim of the machinations of uncaring movie and record moguls setting him and his acolytes up for a fall, but his own massive ego and lack of interpersonal skills. I suppose the moral of this tale, if it has one, is that talent, drive and ambition will never be enough to succeed unless you can find a way of working with others.

One of the best documentaries I have ever seen.

The blind pig-headed ignorant arrogance of one man is breath-taking. You end up willing him to fail as the film moves on to its inevitable -- and actual -- car crash ending.

It is, however, ultimately sad that this moron takes so many other good people with him. For the most part the band only have themselves to blame. They should have opened their mouths instead of being ruled by a mentally disturbed despot.

    Five stars easily...........................

great if you enjoy watching car crashes - and most people do. troy is a worthy chump, a joke who thought he was big time when he was just a wishful toy. 4 stars for the cringe n' giggles.

A film that shows that you can have everything and loose it so easily. A documentary that is filmed in a wobbly 'Blair Witch' style, but charts the huge rise and the monumental fall of the first time writer and in-experienced director Troy Duffy.

Troy worked in a bar, had a collection of good friends from a band he was in, he hit the mother load by getting a film deal to direct the screenplay he had written, someone saw his talent, and that someone was Harvey Weinstien, at Miramax. Unfortunately this is where the ego of Troy goes stratospheric, and beyond his actual talent.

This is a documentary of the explosion of believing in your own hype, and p*ssing off the people around you. Proving you don't kill your golden goose or bite the hand that feeds you.

Troy Duffy must really squirm when he sees this. He may have tallent, but it's going to take some time before he sets Hollywood alight with any future films.

  • A five-star movie on 'how not to make movies'

    Rated - 5.0 stars

Easy to rate. 5-Stars all round......

Painful and cringeworthy most of the time. How one man can be such a total and utter tool is staggering. A study in arrogance, bad attitude, narcissism and uber-ego.

The extras are worth watching - particularly the interview with the film makers - quite revealing.

Honestly, though, a brilliant brilliant BRILLIANT documentary that i watched, for the most part, with open-mouthed aghastness (a word i think ive just invented!).....oh and was he actually talking to himself at the end??

  • Overnight The Troy Duffy Story

I enjoyed this documentary. I saw the Boondock Saints on satelite tv originally and thought what an excellent film. Loved the story and had my interest all the way through. When I saw a documentary had been made on Troy Duffy had to see it to find out what happened as it was such an excellent film and surprised it was not followed up with anything afterwards. Now I know why. A very insightful documentary.
