Oz - Series 6
6th July 2010
What a disappointment this last series of an almost uniformly fantastic programme is. I've been hooked on Oz ever since I found it completely by accident. However, things started to get a little ropey in series 5 and, by series 6, it was in deep trouble. There's a real air of 'rounding off all the stories neatly' - usually by killing off characters by the bucketload, often within 5 minutes of their first ever appearance. The Beecher/Keller story, which has been a running theme throughout all the series, here takes on farcical extremes and starts to lack any sense of credibility (although there is one moment on the 2nd disc when I guarantee that anyone who cares about Beecher will hide their head in their hands and groan 'Nooooooooo Beecher, noooooooo!'.
And the very last episode, rather than going out with a bang, just sputters like a damp firework with a risible ending that will leave you thinking 'Is that IT?'. This outstanding series deserves better than this.
