Why would you take a play and a 1972 novel set in New York City about a bisexual Italo-American burglar and a sexually ambiguous and mildly depressive actor, which is all about opening up and finding yourself, and re-set in present-day Los Angeles?
OK, the basic storyline could still be relevant, and re-interpreting the burglar as a Hispanic works, but removing almost every vestige of the sexual politics from a narrative for which it's essential seems just plain crazy. It's clearly been a labour of love for Steve Guttenberg, since he directs as well as stars in it, but WHY DID HE BOTHER?
I can't say how this film would work for someone unfamiliar with the original novel since it was a great favourite of mine a long time ago: maybe it's entertaining enough, though there are a great many references that don't make sense because of the inexplicable cuts. And it's deeply tiresome to watch Guttenberg, whose only apparent way of playing depression or seriousness is by looking grumpy (like Robin Williams).
Actually, just give it a miss, there are much better films around. And read the book if you can.
I expected this film to be a barrel of Laughs as in the previous review, I infact found this film a barrel of rubbish, the acting, story line and supposed laughs just didnt happen. Right from the beggining it was slow, boring, the acting was so wooden and the whole film was so devoid of laughs i beg you not to waste and hour and a half of your life watching this. I expected better but was bitterly dissapointed...The best bit about this cd was when i posted it back, am im not kidding !!!!!
This film gave me a barrel of laughs. Theres quite a few things in it u cud relate too when of course having a 'bad week'!! Steve Guttenberg really surprised me in this film and it had an unusual but pleasant ending. Definately one to watch!!!
only watched 30 mins then turned it off. very slow.

This film is not a barrel of laughs - it is a comedy, but only just; it is far more about relationships and people. It's an enjoyable film, don't rent it if you're looking for something funny - you'll be disappointed.
The best thing I've seen Steve Guttenberg associated with.
This is a funny film about a bad lucky guy... when everything seemed to go wrong, it gets worse and from the worse situation, he finds the strength to come up... and life gets better...
