Dark and movingBy Carrie Stewart from London, England , 05 Jan 2007
[Highly rated reviewer]I was highly ignorant of what this film would be about. I had seen and heard very little about it, which may have been a good thing. I imagined a young girl being sent to live with this evil guy, overcoming adversity through the aid of a loveable faun. Doesn't that sound nice? (And should David Bowie pop and sing at some point, more's the better. Yes I know it's not that Labyrinth.) I could not have been more wrong if I had tried. What I got was mainly a story of war with snippets of fairytales thrown in, and evil, scary fairytales. The parts set in the real world were highly disturbing, with the Captain being a very vicious man happy to beat people to a bloody pulp on a whim, torture and murder without batting an eye. And our heroine is not safe either. So she happily takes on the faun's tasks that will see her return to the underworld and be free of the Captain. Brilliant tasks, especially the one that sends her underground with one of the scariest film monsters I've ever come across. The man with eyes in his hands. Stay away from the grapes love! Shudder.
This is an excellent film, just not what I expected. Ivana Baquero does a great job of carrying such weighty stuff on her shoulders, and the Captain is perfectly played. The effects were also very good, not too over the top, very realistic, especially the gory bits (though I didn't see that much of them I'll be honest). It was also very moving and did bring tears to my eyes at the end. I really recommend this, but go into it with eyes open, it's certainly not one for the kids.

Highly recommendedBy a customer , 10 Jan 2012Really enjoyed this film even though it was subtitled, showing 2 very extreme ways of life, the desperate lives and struggles of family's and rebels against the Nazi's and a fantasy world of a young girl. Would highly recommend
A Darker Yet More Human 'Labyrinth'By Lobeck (9 reviews) , 07 Jan 2012Similar idea to Jim Hensons 1986 'Labyrinth' (one of my favorite films from childhood) - but this film is for adults, with an altogether darker, yet more human side.
Extremely well acted throughout - particularly the child actress.
Watched in Spanish with English subtitles - excellent subtitling.

A ONE TO WATCHBy nugget202 (2 reviews) , 22 Dec 2011But be warned it isnt all fairytale its rather dark in more ways than one. With devilish character you better not get on the wrong side of them!! 'Ouch & Cringe'
With great actors and special effects it looks and feels soo real. A fantastic story and yea it is in spanish with subs but honestly dont let this put you off. A great film dont miss it
When i watched this film i got totally sucked into it. I love all the mystical and fairytale aspects that are put in here along with blood n gore too! Some of the characters are rather frightning... sleep tight
Forget fairytales, this is dark!By Nickyt (2 reviews) , 12 Dec 2011Fantastic film. I think some people expect it to be a children's story, but it couldn't be further from the truth. There is nothing suitable for children about this. It is dark, tense, scary and, at times, brutal. It holds on to some fairytale magic and awe and at times is visually spectacular.
Definitely put your doubts about films with fairies and magic content aside and watch this!
Parallel linesBy a customer , 31 Oct 2011Engages you from start to finish with its interesting, although at times uneasy mix of, on the one hand, historicaL drama and on the other, fantasy. At times it was like watching two films in parallel. That said, this is a great film, with excellent photgraphy and striking special effects. I am not a film buff but it reminds me of Almodovar in many respects, particularly the gory scenes and bloody, horrific suffering. Really enjoyable, highly recommended.
