I actually really enjoyed this movie, I am an old romantic at heart, would recommend this on a dull day with a mug of hot chocolate....!

    See this movie !

...it is about so much but seems to be about so little !

and Ava could act when she had to ... she steals it from everybody and that includes James !

...but what matters most is the feel of this film....

...it is something else.....but what - you decide ?

For a film about the kind of passion that makes lovers give up their lives for each other, this stiff interpretation is sorely lacking in fire. It is however madly in love with its leading lady – ravishingly shot at every turn. But there is much confusion in what it should be about: bullfights and car racing somehow wander into the mix. James Mason is a bit constipated as the enigmatic sailor who may or may not be the eternal mythical Flying Dutchman, destined to travel the high seas until he finds a woman prepared to give up her life to be with him.

Given that this Blu-ray transfer was supervised by Martin Scorsese, it's surprisingly spotty.

The 'flying Dutchman' is the ever-charming and silver-tongued James Mason, his 'Pandora' the statuesque Ava Gardner. Set in a Spanish port town in the late 1940s/early 1950s it tells of the legend of the sailing Dutchman (with a very English accent!) comdemned to travel the world alone until he meets his destined and doomed lover, Pandora. It's a curious and watchable little film for the strong and starry lead actors and the suspend-your-disbelief mythological story. The Technicolor is a little garish at times and the unconvincing beach at night scenes look as if shot day-for-night. Worth a look though for movie-buffs and those looking for a little Hollywood glamour with a European twist.

This a beautiful fantasy the way films should be made. The opening beachshot that sets up the story if a perfect frame for what is to come.

To some it may be dated and old fashioned but showing love as an unbreakable unexplainable bond that can touch you at any time is what life is about.

If you love your partner would not move the alps 3 foot to the left if you thought it would put a smile on there pretty face?

That is what this movie is about and I recommend it to anyone.

Some critics have complained about the performances but James Mason and Ava Gardner understand their roles perfectly. He is tired and believes his curse will never be lifted and she toys with peoples affections thinking she is in control of her emotions.

Remembered this film from years ago. Ava Gardner sizzles as Pandora. James Mason suprisingly low key in this film. Story of the Flying Dutchman searching for the woman who can free him from the curse of roaming the seven seas for eternity. Not a bad film, but perhaps a little over long. One for a wet afternoon.
