This is nothing to do with the more recent Aussie film of the same name, though its story line follows vaguely similar fantasy-life lines. Keir Dullea, alias astronaut David Bowman in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: a Space Odyssey, comes down to earth to play a small-town hockey hero and ladies' man who leads a double life as the town's gunfighter. In his daydreams, anyway. Nicely acted by a cast which also includes Elizabeth Ashley, the film holds interest but never quite scales the same heights of escapist excellence as The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
Amiable, though predictable, romantic comedy, with a few sideswipes at macho attitudes on the way.
It's hard to work out exactly what's so perfect about this film (unless of course you just accept that Hugh Jackman is too gorgeous for words). It's not particularly unusual or unpredictable but everyone plays their part beautifully, there are comic touches and good characters. For those who like their romance not too sugary sweet but perfect in the end this is a delight.
If you enjoyed Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Muriel's Wedding, this is a must-see. Featuring Hugh Jackman as an Outback truck driver who has secretly written a romance novel and tries to pass it off as the work of his tomboy friend.
The storyline can tend to be a bit formulaic, but the characters are hilarious and embarrassingly realistic.
