Beautiful animation wacky story.
By sylewis (2 reviews) from London , 28 Oct 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
Being a big fan of Studio Ghibli films I was looking forward to Paprika as I was expecting a similar viewing experience. I wasn't disappointed. The film looks beautiful and the animation is high quality mix of 2d and 3d (the 3d stuff is designed to blend in unnoticeably - so you shouldn't notice it unless you're looking for it!). The story is your typical wacky Japanese animation storyline so don't expect to care much about the plot or try to make too much sense of it. Just sit back and enjoy being washed over by some great visual treats and zany characters. As with all of these type of films I ALWAYS find them much more enjoyable when watching with Japanese audio and English subtitles. I feel you get closer to the real experience and don't have to suffer annoying american voice-over artists getting the timing/inflection wrong all the time! Enjoy.- Was this review helpful to you?

(33)I must be dreaming!
By a customer , 13 Feb 2013Brilliant film with wonderful animation but you really must pay your full attention to it! So that means no multitasking...
The film blasts you with colours and imagination with quite a bit of action...
If you are a anime fan then you must watch it!- Was this review helpful to you?

Clever reality/dream plot
By sarahwri (60 reviews) , 16 Oct 2012Nothing about this film is average. It is a very weird reality/dream shift narrative in the style of the matrix or inception. The film i think it most resembles however is A Scanner Darkly where both the audience and the characters lose a grasp on what is real.
It was good but it felt like it should have been a lot better and was vaguely dissatisfying. This might be due to problems with the script or characterisation. I'd definitely recommend if you're into anime or reality bending science fiction even though it felt a tad disappointing.- Was this review helpful to you?

spice is nice but could do with a little more cooking
By NativityInBlack (119 reviews) from Birmingham , 05 Oct 2012great animation and some awsome visual ideas but i wish the film had a little longer run time to build the characters a little more.
for my liking it felt too streamlined and i would have enjoyed more slow bits to contrast the fast paced action.- Was this review helpful to you?

Paprika as dreamwork and as a genre study of cinema
By a customer , 07 Mar 2012Satoshi Kon understands very well how the limits of cinema can be pushed through animation. The use of genre films (thriller, crime, romance) as a backdrop to the story helps drive home his use of animation to create a very flexible, plastic universe for his characters to inhabit. That on top of the beautiful artwork makes this an amazing, highly watchable film.
Some of the reviews suggest that the story line is confusing but it's no more confusing than films like Inception -- or any other film that relies on dream sequences to tell its story. The characters are interesting and lively, with unexpected developments.- Was this review helpful to you?

Great animation, confusing story.
By a customer , 01 Dec 2011I was so disappointed by this anime. I felt rather deflated after.
The animation is superb, I cannot fault that. However, the story is just so confusing; I had no idea what was happening or why.
(Now I am not dumb; I watched Inception the first time, understood and loved it!)
If I had to compare this anime to something else;
The Cell, Inception and The Matirx - which makes this anime sound amazing - it's not.- Was this review helpful to you?
